WHAT EACH CLASS COVERS

Creative Movements – This is where it all starts. Creative Movements introduces the very youngest students to dance through various genres of music and dance, rhythm games, movement exploration, and coordination exercises. The focus is on confidence, body awareness, and making class feel like the best part of the week.

Mini Ballet and Mini Ballet/Jazz – A beginner technique class built for young bodies. Students learn posture, alignment, basic flexibility, and coordination through simple ballet and jazz exercises. This class builds a strong physical foundation that supports every style of dance.

Ballet/Jazz Junior – A more structured technique class that develops control, clean lines, flexibility, and strength. Students work on the quality of their movement, not just learning steps. Choreography is developed through the term and performed at recitals.

Hip Hop (Mini, Junior, Youth) – Hip Hop classes focus on groove, rhythm, coordination, and performance confidence. Students learn foundational steps, musicality, and choreography that builds week over week. The vibe is energetic and fun, but the technique is real.

K-Pop (Junior, Youth, Crew) K-Pop classes are performance-based. Students learn commercial choreography with a focus on precision, timing, energy, and stage presence. This is not a casual class. Students are expected to be focused and pick up choreography quickly.

PERFORMANCES

Twice a year, your child steps onto a real stage, in costume, in front of an audience, and shows what they have been building all season. It is one of those moments parents talk about for years.

Christmas Showcase: Every December, our students take the stage for a full production performance in front of family and friends. For most kids this is their first time performing in costume under real stage lights. It never gets old for the parents either.

Dance on Yonge: Every summer we take it outside. Our students perform on Yonge Street as part of one of Toronto’s most loved community events. Free admission, open air, and always one of the highlights of the year. If you want to see what your child has been working toward all season, this is the moment.

COMPETITIVE TEAM PROGRAM 2026–2027

K-Pop + Hip Hop · Pre-Comp + Comp · Ages 7–15

Some kids are ready for more. More training, more challenges, more growth and experience on stage. If that sounds like your child, this is where they belong.

Our Competitive Team Program is a structured, serious pathway for dancers ages 7–15 who are ready to commit to the craft. Three training sessions per week, mandatory technique cross-training, real competition experience, feedback from professional adjudicators, and a chance to win titles. This is where dancers stop just learning choreography and start becoming performers.

Recreational

Pre-Competitive Team Competitive Team
Training 1 class per week 2 classes per week 3 classes per week
Performances 2 Star Dance Performances 2 Star Dance Performances + Community events 2 Star Dance Performances + 2 Competitions
Entry Open registration Placement by audition or invitation Placement by audition or invitation
Pricing Refer to Recreational Page $169 per month $239 per month

Not sure which program is right for your child? If they are just starting out, Recreational is the perfect place to begin. If your child has prior dance experience, we offer assessments to find the right fit from day one.

PRE-COMP VS COMP: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Both programs are part of our competitive stream, but they are designed for different stages of a dancer’s development.

Pre-Competitive Team

Pre-Comp is for dancers who are ready for more than a recreational class but not yet ready for the full competitive commitment. Students in this program are enrolled in three components: one regular recreational class, one Hip Hop Foundations class, and one Team Training session per week.

This structure is intentional. Pre-Comp students are still grounded in the recreational class setting, building technique and performance experience alongside their peers, while getting their first real taste of team training and focused development. They perform twice during the season: once through their recreational class at our annual showcases, and once as part of their competitive team. No mandatory competitions this season. Pre-Comp is the on-ramp, not the destination.

Competitive Team

Comp Team students train three sessions per week across Team Training and two Foundational classes (Hip Hop Foundation and Jazz Technique). They are no longer in a standard recreational class. Their training is fully oriented toward competition and high-level performance. Comp teams compete at 2 competitions this season in addition to 2 Star Dance performances, during the year more performances opportunities can be granted to these teams.

The transition from Pre-Comp to Comp happens by placement, not automatically. A student stays in Pre-Comp until they are ready for the full commitment, both in skill and in schedule.

WHAT EVERY TEAM TRAINS AND WHY IT TAKES THREE DAYS

One class a week is enough to learn choreography. It is not enough to actually build a dancer.

Our competitive program requires three training sessions per week because each one serves a different purpose and the three only work when they are stacked together. Take one away and the whole thing loses its foundation.

Hip Hop Foundations This is where movement quality is built. Whether your child is on the Hip Hop team or the K-Pop team, this class is non-negotiable. K-Pop choreography is built on hip hop vocabulary, so without this foundation the movement looks copied rather than felt. Groove, timing, weight shifts, and musicality are what separate a dancer who just knows the steps from one who actually owns the stage. You cannot fake this. It either lives in the body or it does not, and this class is where it gets built.

Jazz Technique This is the session most parents do not expect to be on the list, and it is the one that makes the biggest visible difference. Jazz technique is what makes choreography look clean rather than just correct. It builds flexibility, control, balance, and the kind of body awareness that makes every move look intentional. You will not always see the jazz in a K-Pop or Hip Hop performance, but you will absolutely notice when it is missing. This is the difference between a routine that looks rehearsed and one that looks like dancing.

Team Training This is where everything comes together. Choreography, formations, spacing, transitions, performance quality, and the mental side of competing as a group. Every dancer in that room is a piece of the puzzle. When someone is missing or unprepared, the whole group feels it. This is where routines get built, cleaned, and pushed to the level that holds up on a competition stage.

Three days. Three different jobs. All three necessary.

Beyond the Studio

What happens in team training doesn’t stay in the studio. The discipline of showing up prepared, the accountability of being someone your team counts on, learning to push through when something is hard, knowing how to take feedback and come back better. These are not just dance skills. They are life skills. We just happen to teach them through dance.

FAQ

Can my child stay in regular classes instead? Absolutely. Recreational classes are our main program and a great fit for the majority of our students. One class per week, a supportive environment, and two recital performances per year. The Competitive Program is specifically for families who want more training time, mandatory cross-training, and the experience of competing with professional feedback. Neither path is better. They are just different goals.

What is the weekly time commitment? Every team requires three components: Hip Hop Foundations, Jazz Technique, and Team Rehearsal. Pre-Comp teams train approximately 2 to 3 sessions per week including their recreational class. Comp teams train 3 sessions per week. See the schedule section above for exact days and times by team.

Why is Jazz technique required? Jazz is what makes everything else look clean. It builds flexibility, balance, control, and the kind of body awareness that makes choreography look intentional rather than memorized. K-Pop and Hip Hop both rely on it more than most people realize. You just don’t see the jazz when it’s done well. You only notice when it’s missing.

Why does K-Pop need Hip Hop foundations? K-Pop choreography is commercial-based and built directly on hip hop vocabulary: groove, weight shifts, timing, and texture. Without those foundations the movement looks copied rather than felt. The foundations are what make it look like the dancer understands the style, not just the steps.

Are competitions mandatory? For Comp Teams, yes. The team commits to the full performance and competition schedule for the season, currently planned as 1 competition and 3 performances. For Pre-Comp Teams, this season is 3 performances with no mandatory competition. Pre-Comp is the intentional on-ramp to the full competition experience.

What are the extra costs beyond tuition? Tuition covers all training. Additional costs that vary by season include competition entry fees, costumes per routine, an optional team jacket, travel and accommodation if applicable, and spectator tickets if required by the event. We provide a full budget breakdown once competitions and routine counts are confirmed. We don’t like surprises and we don’t want you to have any either.

Can my child take recreational classes on top of the team program? In most cases yes. Pre-Comp students are already enrolled in a recreational class as part of their program. For Comp Team students, we want to make sure the schedule is sustainable and that team obligations always take priority. Reach out to us and we will look at the full picture together.

My child has experience from another studio or country. Can they still join? Yes. If your child has prior dance experience we offer an assessment to find the right placement from day one. This applies to dancers coming from another studio, city, or country. Reach out to us at info@stardancecentre.com to arrange an assessment before the season starts.

What if my child misses classes or rehearsals? We understand that life happens. What we ask is that you communicate with us in advance whenever possible. If a dancer misses 3 or more sessions within a 2-month period we will reach out to talk through next steps together. In cases where the commitment genuinely cannot be maintained, removal from the team may be necessary. We handle these situations honestly and always speak with families before making any changes.

Can we withdraw mid-season? Because the team is built around a committed group, with choreography, costumes, and competition entries all planned around everyone being there, mid-season withdrawals have a real impact on the rest of the dancers. Written notice of at least 60 days is required, a withdrawal fee applies, and competition and costume costs already committed are non-refundable. Exceptions may be considered for documented situations such as relocation or a medical recommendation.
